The habits you speak of seem to be ones that in my three year slow March to lose weight, I have noticed that are helpful.

I would also mention that in my visits to Europe including France there seems to be a lot more walking. And the walking more (usually 2 miles after dinner, plus just a general effort to get more steps in) also helps a lot.
